Frozen 2 Review
Myla Tosatto
There’s a whole lot to unpack from the goodness that is Frozen 2, but let me just get right out and say it even though I realize that it will seem blasphemous to some Frozen folk: I loved Frozen 2 so much more than Frozen. I loved every second of it (except when I choked on my candy and had to run out of the theater so as not to distract my fellow movie goers but that is a story for another time). I really enjoyed Frozen, I really did. But Frozen 2 just carried Anna (Kristin Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad), and Sven’s story out so perfectly. Some of the gaps of the relationships that left me unsatisfied in the first movie came together in the new film.
In Frozen 2 we catch up with the Arendelle gang in autumn. The kingdom looks lovely, the villagers are happy and our Frozen friends, especially Olaf, are realizing that everything changes. This is the first lesson that Frozen 2 has to offer kids. Elsa, however, is feeling a little restless. She longs to head to the unknown. After hearing a voice that calls to her, she does just that. Of course, Anna and the crew go with her. There they set off on a road trip to help them discover their past. Elsa learns important lesson #2 here. I won’t spoil what it is but parents should be very happy with what Frozen 2 is serving up. Being a Disney movie, though, we are faced with Iduna (Evan Rachel Wood) and Agnarr’s (Alfred Molina) deaths again. You really MUST remember that Elsa and Anna are orphans.
You are probably wondering if Olaf steals the show. Of course he does! His retelling of the plot to Frozen is the highlight of the movie! Gad, Bell, and Menzel are so well suited to their parts it’s hard to imagine that they are actors and not Olaf, Anna and Elsa. This is voice acting at its finest.
And the newcomers? Sterling K. Brown as Mattias is as magical as always and yes, there are two new magical creatures to love (and buy the merchandise of).
Now excuse me as I watch Frozen on repeat on Disney Plus and listen to the Frozen 2 soundtrack endlessly!
