The potty training journey is an exciting milestone, but parents can find it frustrating because they don’t understand the process. Kids can get confused because parents are giving mixed signals. So I did some of the work for you and I asked experienced moms for some Potty Training Tips. These are tips that they wish someone would have shared with them! Here are some of their entertaining responses:
Potty Training Tips For a New Mom
Gretchen says, “My advice to other moms is not to be stressed about it or stress your child about it. They won’t go to kindergarten in diapers.” Translation: It is going to happen when it happens, don’t feel pressure because they reached “the age” you were told they were supposed to start. Gretchen: “For teaching my son, I had him sit backwards on the toilet. That helped keep me from getting sprayed and transitioned to standing up.” I love the way this mommy thinks! Sarah: “Post it notes for automatic flushing toilets in public…Having 2 boys, I also found that you need a high pee guard on the potty!!” Since I only have girls, I have no clue what that means, I better run to Google! Mary: “I knew this but it always upsets me when people think that there 2 or 3 year old newly potty trained child should be able to stay dry all night. It is a chemical in the brain that wakes you up to tell you that you need to pee. That chemical isn’t produced until as early as 2 but it can be 7 or 8 years old. That’s why there are big kid overnight Pull-Ups®. Don’t think potty training isn’t done till they are dry all night. That will come on its own and no reward/punishment/training will make it come any sooner.”
Jennie: “That there is no ‘warning’ button when they need to go. If they need to go you get less than two minutes to get then to the potty. Talk about some crazy dashes around stores trying to find the potty. Great part was when he learned we stop everything for him to potty- clever kid would start using this when bored of shopping.” I remember going through this at the stores with my oldest. We would go potty and about 20 minutes later she would have to go again. You also have to believe them every time, the moment you stall, the accident happens.
Tonya: “We always carried a Lil potty in the car with us because public toilets can be so gross. I would have my little one go before going in the store… Made it easier! My almost 5 year old that’s been “potty trained” since two still wears a diaper at night. I’ve stopped pushing it, about a year ago I woke her up every few hours to go and she’d have a full bladder, she just doesn’t have that chemical yet so we don’t stress! Its also hereditary so I’ve heard, my brother and my mother took a looong time to not have overnight accidents up until 11-12. I hope that isn’t the case (because of the stigma behind it) but I won’t shame her for it!”
