When visiting Disney Toon Studios I was so excited to learn about the movie Planes! Our family loves the Pixar films, Cars…and we LOVED Planes. It was my 4 year old’s favorite. She actually liked it before we even went to see it! This movie holds a special place in my heart because it was one of our first times taking out baby out and our 2 week year old’s baby first visit to the theater!
It was so much fun to hear the director, Klay Hall and Producer, Traci Balthazor-Flynn talk! There were some really neat things I didn’t know until I heard them speak! So here are 5 things you probably didn’t know:
1. Klay Hall was wanting to do a movie on Trains!
” The origin, how it all began. First of all, it was about four and half years ago, we’ve worked on this for four and a half years. We’re just gonna finish up here, I think in three more weeks. So, I had just finished my previous movie, uh, with John Lasseter, and I was in that phase of what are we gonna do next? And him and I had become pretty good friends about, um, several different things.
But we found out that we a had a common passion about all things sort of mechanical. Trains was a big one, planes, cars, all that kind of stuff, you know. So I was kicking around ideas and originally, I started thinking about a steam engine, really sort of a transcontinental railroad story. Um, but it wasn’t anywhere from the world of cars. It actually was gonna deal with, like, humans and animals and all that kinds of stuff, and I was gonna tell this tale, this story of the railroad.
And, and he’s very excited, you know, we’re both history buffs as well, and it was really coming along and it was, it was, um, shaping up so to speak, as far as stories go, but then out of the blue one day- he likes to tell the story and it’s true, he was flying down in, uh, in the jet from Pixar to Disney Studios, and an epiphany hit him on the way down. And he landed and he literally called me up, and he’s like, Klay, I know you’re working on the trains thing, and that’s cool and all that, but what do you think about doing one about Planes and making it from a standpoint of cars?” –Klay
2. Since Planes and Cars were done in two different studios you won’t recognize any of the same names on who worked on the movie accept for John Lasseter!
3. Klay hopes to do a Locomotive Trains movie!
“I would love to tell the story sometime. Yeah, I love, I love steam trains.”–Klay
4. Easter Egg FUN! You wouldn’t share any Easter eggs at the time of the first Planes. Do you have any you can share now?
” We, we still don’t like to share…you know, our team, they love finding little bits to drop in there, and I think if we give them away, it doesn’t service them to find them for us to put them in there.” –Traci
5. 600 people worked on Planes.
